I itch all over just thinking about it, but if you own just about any animal, you will deal with mites and lice at some point. We have come up with a spray solution that we use to treat pests. I use this same mix for my animals and their coops. It kills fleas, lice, mites, spiders, roaches and many more bugs, but is safe for my birds. First let’s look at the different symptoms and then we I will post the recipe so you can make your own super effective spray.

Scaly leg mite symptoms

Raised scales on the legs, crusty legs and lameness in severe cases. In the early stages of the infection your bird will have mild irritation. It takes several months of infection before the scales on the legs start to lift.

Treatment – Soak feet is enough solution to cover feet for 3 to 10 minutes depending on severity lightly brushing feet to help clear under scales.  then cover with vaseline. Repeat as needed until symptoms go away.

Early Stages of the infestation

Still a mild case

Severe Case, Very painful

Depluming Mites are closely related to scaley leg mites, they just prefer fathered parts of the body rather than legs and cause for obvious feather loss. These mites burrow deep into the skin and cause major itching

Treatment –  Insecticide spray followed up with a dusting diatomaceous earth once the spray dries.

Red Mite – The common red mite can strike any hen house at anytime but especially during the warmer summer months. . They can be quite difficult to spot as they come out at night to feed on your hen’s blood and hide during the day. We suggest a regular check of your birds under their wings and around their vents, however, this will not always reveal their presence as they don’t spend all their time on the bird. We recommend entering the house after dark with a torch and looking around the ends of the perches and cracks where they might be hiding. Red mites are blood suckers. When you see a grey dust-like substance, these are mites that have not yet fed. Once they have feed, they turn bright red and then dark red. If you squash them you will see a trail of blood. Alternatively, take a piece of white paper and swipe between the cracks and crevices – if red mite are present, you will see streaks of blood on your paper

Red mites are actually grey and don’t turn red until they have sucked the blood of their host.

Red mite can begin reproducing as young as 1 week, can lay up to 150 eggs at a time and will live for up to 8 weeks.

I found this youtube video about treating your coup to be very helpful. Getting an infestation treated quickly and thoroughly is key. Don’t forget to follow up again in a week and then monthly to stay on top of it.

The Sticktite flea – these fleas will burrow their heads into the birds skin and will often stay there until they are removed by tweezers. Even if they fall off after they die, there is a chance the head will remain imbedded and cause an infection

Treatment – You will want to spray the bird very well so that when you take tweezers to pluck each one off one by one, they aren’t running around and jumping onto you.

Lice symptoms – Red or sore skin around the vent area

Lice and nits around the shaft of the feathers.

Nits on base of feathers
